Recap 9/30/19

Today we talked about Broadway. Before movies and tv, broadways were very popular to the public, but the evolution of technology decreased ticket sales for Broadway. However, besides for the year 2001, because of 9/11, Broadway has grown back and is full steam ahead. We looked at multiple Broadways including The Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, The Lion King, Mamma Mia, and On Your Feet. These are musicals and not operas because there is a lot more talking, and the singers use mikes. You could definitely see the use of technology in the Broadway show. The enhanced technology gives the audience a better experience while watching the Broadway show. This experience was not nearly the same when Broadway first started back in the early 90's.         We then watched a documentary on Vaudeville. In the show, African Americans were not allowed to act on stage, so white men would use darkened cork to cover their faces and appear as if they were Afric...

Opera "mise en scene" and video game 9/23/19

When watching this opera, I discovered how opera can connect to real life and emotions. For example, at the end of the play, people did not care for Pinkerton for the way he treated Madame Butterfly. This teaches the people in the audience that you should not treat people this way. You should not just leave someone and not tell them that you are never coming back. Because of this lesson taught by the opera, I believe that the audience reacted just as Madama Butterfly did. They were devastated and saddened with how the outcome turned out and wishes for this outcome to never occur again. However, I do believe that this piece is important to the chronology of opera because it shows the future on how the use technology can express emotion in opera. For example, in Madama Butterfly, the technology used to create music and sound effects gave a better connection to the audience in terms of suspense and emotion. Without this technological aspect, I do think that the ...

Animation Madama Butterfly 9/23/19

The animation of Madama Butterfly was quite different than the real opera. Pinkerton left Madama Butterfly to be a cruise ship captain. While he was away, Pinkerton had a little boy and the two waited for Pinkerton to come back. In the animation, Pinkerton did come back, but he took the little boy and left. This devastated Madama Butterfly and caused her to break down emotionally and kill herself. This is in contrast to the real opera because in the real opera, Pinkerton did not come back. Once Madama Butterfly realized that Pinkerton wasn't coming back, she killed herself while her son was by her side blindfolded. In terms of personal preference, I liked the opera better because it was more graphic. When Madama Butterfly tore herself apart, the viewer had a clear connection to her emotions. As the viewer, I physically could feel Madama Butterfly's emotion, sadness, and devastation. Lastly, I also liked the animation better because it was accompanied by good music that correlat...

Recap 9/23/19

Opera became the main entertainment that people had. Quires used young boys for their soprano voices. However, these boys had to go through castration. This caused most of the young boys to die early due to infection. Most young boys had very poor families but singing allowed their family to be sustained until the boy lost his voice. With the lack of testosterone, the boys could reach a higher pitch that most females couldn't. Now, technology is being used in opera to try to create a closer relationship to the audience. I do not agree with this because I feel that the use of technology will take away the connection rather than enhancement.          We then watched Madama Butterfly. The gentleman makes a deal to find a girl for him. He is advised not to do this because even though it may be a joke for him, it is not for Madama Butterfly. The two get married and she has to change every thing about herself to American including he...

Recap 9/16/19

First we traveled to the Hagia Sophia. The size and design was very extravagant which allowed many dictators to rule their religion to the region. The architecture and design was very elaborate given its rich history. Next, we traveled to Turkey for the whirling dervishes. These performers only focus about Allah, which is the name of God, and represent the fact that we share what Allah gave to the Earth. Next was the Gothic Cathedral. There was numerous stained glass windows and a rose window so the people attending the service could enjoy the natural sunlight. Both entertainment and business took place there. However, only the wealthy could attend. Next, we attended the Notre Dame. Even though that the cathedral may be old it still preaches its purpose to put people in better shape than they arrived. It has great, grand windows, but water makes the structure weaker, so the gargoyles spit the water out. The novel, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, saved the church from being torn down. We t...

Recap 9/9/19

While watching the films in class, I found it very interesting how the form of art has changed. For example, in the beginning, the Native Americans created peaceful films. However, as time evolved, the forms of films and entertainment became more violent. For example, the greek amphitheater was solely used for unhazardous entertainment purposes. Then, ancient Rome slowly turned the entertainment into more violence. Instead of chariot racing without violence, riders would try to hit each other to try to hurt other riders and horses. Audiences found this entertaining and enjoyed the increased violence. Then came the colosseum. People started to love to watch the poor, including slaves and soldiers, to be tortured as the main form of entertainment. As you can see, the first forms of entertainment had no violence in them at all, but now the forms of art are solely based off violence. This was not the purpose of art and entertainment. The sole purpose was to provide peaceful forms of art. I...

Multimedia 9/9/19 (Cuero)

After watching the Dr. Cuero video, I found his background and success very interesting. When Dr. Cuero was young, he would look through scraps and picked up all the books and magazines he could find. He did this because he wanted to learn how to read and write. His father pretended that he knew how to read and write, but Cuero actually wanted to be able to do it. In the meantime, Cuero played basketball in order to receive a scholarship to grant himself higher education. While he was playing basketball, Cuero was looked at differently, but he continued to play on the court in order to have value through education in the future. After school, he created nine scientific inventions and wrote a book to teach people that no matter what ethnic background someone is from, they can still succeed. While watching the video, I learned that you should do what your passionate about and not let anyone else influence your thoughts and path. I also learned that creat...
