Recap 9/30/19
Today we talked about Broadway. Before movies and tv, broadways were very popular to the public, but the evolution of technology decreased ticket sales for Broadway. However, besides for the year 2001, because of 9/11, Broadway has grown back and is full steam ahead. We looked at multiple Broadways including The Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, The Lion King, Mamma Mia, and On Your Feet. These are musicals and not operas because there is a lot more talking, and the singers use mikes. You could definitely see the use of technology in the Broadway show. The enhanced technology gives the audience a better experience while watching the Broadway show. This experience was not nearly the same when Broadway first started back in the early 90's.
We then watched a documentary on Vaudeville. In the show, African Americans were not allowed to act on stage, so white men would use darkened cork to cover their faces and appear as if they were African Americans. This is known as black face. African Americans did not like this, so they created there own shows on the streets to entertain themselves. Whites had trouble competing with their real nature. However in Vaudeville, African Americans that had loads of talent were forced to give up their roles and do something else that resembled a poorer role.
In addition, we talked about jazz. Jazz is a specific type of music that has its own way to be played. Even though jazz was one of the first forms of the American set, I do not particularly like jazz. Partliculary, I do not like how slow jazz is and the fact that most of the time, there is no words accompanied by the jazz music. If I were to pick between blues and jazz, I would pick blues because it has a more upbeat tempo.
Lastly, we talked about Dadaism. Dadaism is a form entertainment that is very bizarre and illogical, but people do pay attention to it. While watching the video regarding the beginnings of Dada and Cabaret Voltaire, I clearly see where the terms bizarre and illogical come from. I found it very interesting how the performers used their actions to evoke a message and theme to the audience. Overall, I would choose other forms of entertainment if I had to spread a message to a big audience.
