Recap 9/23/19

Opera became the main entertainment that people had. Quires used young boys for their soprano voices. However, these boys had to go through castration. This caused most of the young boys to die early due to infection. Most young boys had very poor families but singing allowed their family to be sustained until the boy lost his voice. With the lack of testosterone, the boys could reach a higher pitch that most females couldn't. Now, technology is being used in opera to try to create a closer relationship to the audience. I do not agree with this because I feel that the use of technology will take away the connection rather than enhancement.
We then watched Madama Butterfly. The gentleman makes a deal to find a girl for him. He is advised not to do this because even though it may be a joke for him, it is not for Madama Butterfly. The two get married and she has to change every thing about herself to American including her religion. No one wants to be involved with her anymore, so she is left all alone. However, he is still not taking any of this seriously. After getting married, she constantly waits for him to get back. While everyone else knows he's not coming back, she still thinks he is coming back. In the meantime, she has a little boy and continues to wait. Once she finds out, she kills herself with her fathers knife that he used to kill himself with.
