Recap 10/7/19

Today, we started class by listening to blues. We listened to Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Janis Joplin, and Mary Blige. We then listened to Soul music. We listened to Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, James Brown. Personally, I prefer blues over soul. I think that blues is actual music while soul was just a lot of yelling with music in the background. In addition, I love the guitar in blues.
We then moved to technology. First, we talked about decontextualization. Decontextualization is changing the use of an object to do something else. I think this form of art is very interesting because it evokes creative thinking in a individual. We watched a documentary on Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo had a very creative mind. He wanted his art to interact with its audience when people went to look at his work. I personally enjoy Leonardo's inventions, for example, the bridge, over paintings, but I appreciate both forms of art very much. We also looked at Theo Jansen. He invented animal like creators made out of PVC that could walk on their own. Jansen really makes the object look alive which is what I really like about his invention.
After decontextualization, we looked at interactivity. Interactivity is important because it breaks the fourth wall. However, interactivity does threaten our privacy. In the near future, we as users of technology have to decide how much interactivity we want to have versus how much privacy we would like. Since both together is highly unlikely, it will be a very important decision that will change the future of technology and how it continues to evolve in society.
We then talked about evolution while connecting it to cave paintings. A very common cave painting was a handprint on the wall. These paintings are very interesting because it shows how long cavemen have been painting. We also looked at obscura. This type of art when using a pinhole camera is very fascinating because they have distance, depth, and perspective. In addition, we talked about using a grid while drawing. This is helpful because it allows the artist to take something complex and make it much simpler to draw.
Lastly, we talked about motion. First, we tried matching the golden ratio. Many of peers, including me, tried to see if the measurements would line up, but they were always off by a little. We also talked about animation and how animation is used in a performance art piece. This is important information because it will help me think of ideas for my video that I will have to do later in the semester.
