Recap 9/9/19

While watching the films in class, I found it very interesting how the form of art has changed. For example, in the beginning, the Native Americans created peaceful films. However, as time evolved, the forms of films and entertainment became more violent. For example, the greek amphitheater was solely used for unhazardous entertainment purposes. Then, ancient Rome slowly turned the entertainment into more violence. Instead of chariot racing without violence, riders would try to hit each other to try to hurt other riders and horses. Audiences found this entertaining and enjoyed the increased violence. Then came the colosseum. People started to love to watch the poor, including slaves and soldiers, to be tortured as the main form of entertainment. As you can see, the first forms of entertainment had no violence in them at all, but now the forms of art are solely based off violence. This was not the purpose of art and entertainment. The sole purpose was to provide peaceful forms of art. I do not agree with how violence is evolving and manipulating art and entertainment because I do not think that individuals should thrive on violence. Thriving on violence takes away the positivity of art which should never be the case when looking at art in its purest form.

  1. Hi Audrey,
I agree with you that the overall change in focus towards violence has ruined and changed the way many view art. Many of the video games and movies within today's society rely heavily on violence in order to be popular. This has resulted in an overall change in attitude towards many movies and an almost corruption of the purposes of movies. I was wondering what you think society can do to try and overcome this evolution towards violence?
